OUR HISTORY

Our Foundation

Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell, along with six other “Founding Fathers,” chartered the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity in 1850 at the University of Pennsylvania. Fifty-three years later, the Alpha Mu chapter at M.I.T. was founded on October 16th, 1903, establishing a legacy that continues to this day.

Our Founder

Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell

The visionary founder who, along with six other dedicated men, established Phi Kappa Sigma at the University of Pennsylvania in 1850. His commitment to brotherhood, scholarship, and moral excellence laid the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy across the nation, including our own Alpha Mu chapter at M.I.T.

1850
National Founding
Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell and six other Founding Fathers charter Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania, establishing the principles and values that would guide generations of brothers.
1903
Alpha Mu Chapter Founded
On October 16th, the Alpha Mu chapter is established at M.I.T., bringing the Phi Kappa Sigma tradition to one of America’s premier technical institutions.
1904
The Rebuilding
Only four men returned to represent Phi Kappa Sigma in the fall, but they immediately began an active campaign for new members. With nothing but friendship, hard work, and fraternal prestige, they grew the membership to thirteen by spring.
1905
First Chapter House
After renting a single room on Huntington Avenue until Christmas, the chapter secured several rooms at 262 Newbury Street in the heart of the fraternity district – the first important step toward establishing Phi Kappa Sigma’s reputation at M.I.T.
1908
Historic House Built
The beautiful Back Bay residence at 530 Beacon Street is constructed, destined to become the permanent home of Alpha Mu chapter.
1916
Beacon Street Acquired
Alpha Mu purchases the chapter house at 530 Beacon Street, the same year M.I.T. moved its campus across the Charles River to Cambridge. This strategic location bridged the gap between campus and the vibrant Boston community.
1996
Grand Renovation
Through strong alumni connections, Alpha Mu raises millions of dollars for major renovations. A fifth story with skylight lounge and balcony rooms is added, along with an elevator to meet modern building codes.

Alumni Leadership & Legacy

For more than fifty years, the Alpha Mu chapter has been guided by their Alumni Association, chaired by long-time President William Denhard ’42, to whom the dining room is now dedicated. Recently, Keith Kallberg ’68 was elected to continue this tradition of alumni leadership. The strong connection between active members and alumni continues through events like Founder’s Day, providing networking opportunities and maintaining the bonds of brotherhood across generations.

Our Home Today

Revitalized and restored, Alpha Mu now boasts one of the most beautiful Boston residences of M.I.T. The historic Back Bay house at 530 Beacon Street stands as a testament to over a century of brotherhood, combining classical architecture with modern amenities to serve as both a home and a symbol of our enduring legacy.
