phi kappa sigma

Once a Phikap, Always a Phikap.

The Alpha Mu Chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma has worked hard to maintain the strong alumni programs and is proud to have such a close connection with our alumni. In 2003 we had our centennial celebration, which renewed enthusiasm amongst alumni and provided the active chapter with a chance to give back to those who kept the PhiKap tradition strong.

Alpha Mu is proud of its unbelievably active and strong trust, which maintains its own website. The trust, led by Keith Kallberg '68, has quarterly meetings to discuss the chapter's wellbeing. Each meeting is attended by the executive committee of the chapter, as well as a new member that does not know the older alumni in the trust, in order to familiarize every brother with their workings and importance.

In 1996, the trust decided to renovate the chapter house and ran The Campaign for 530, raising $1.7 million. Our alumni led the charge for funding empty beds in houses during the transition to the freshmen-on-campus policy by writing The White Article. Denhard, and many other trust members are in constant contact with MIT to preserve not only the house's wellbeing, but also to maintain the fraternity system in general. They helped start the Independent Residences Development Fund (IRDF) which is a channel through which alumni can make tax-deductible donations to the independent living groups at MIT.

President Hockfield in the Chapter Room

Throughout the year we have a variety of alumni events. Alumni have come over to attend dinners, both informal house dinners and formal Alumni dinners. We welcome our alumni at rituals and are glad to share our fraternal bond with them. We have also held other events for our alumni, such as a welcoming reception for President Hockfield in our house which was attended by many alumni. Lineage Cup, an in-house color war, is held annually and concludes with an alumni dinner. Even when there are no specific alumni functions, alumni can always be found at the house hanging out with the active brothers.

Alumni from more recent years play a large role in recruitment each year. This year, alumni came up for a few days from as far away California, fitting time into their busy work schedules. Their experience and advice is invaluable, and is especially appreciated at such a busy time.

Every semester, the Alumni Relations Chair spearheads the effort to publish 530 AM, our chapter's newsletter. 530 AM usually contains articles by the officers of the chapter, an introduction to our new members, communications from the trust president, and other news that alumni wish to share.
